Poverty

by: Shaira Dizon

Poverty is one of the main problems that our country, the Philippines, is currently facing. It is one of the major concerns of every Filipino people. This poverty may result to crime, and corruption can cause poverty among poor and less-fortunate Filipino people. But why is there such thing as poverty? Can we prevent it?

Poverty occurs in a place if a family cannot afford to meet their needs, and wants, and people experience poverty because of lack of work, and lack of money. Poverty can lead to death that’s why people are doing everything they can to prevent it, and this is the reason why crimes arise, because of poverty. Filipinos are known for their hard works, that’s why even now, poverty became a problem in the Philippines.

We can prevent poverty to occur in our place if we learn how to be self-reliant, we don’t need to depend on other people in terms of money and anything else because it is our duty to stand on our own feet, poverty is real, we need to accept the fact that we need to strive and work hard to meet our needs, for our families, and for ourselves. We just need to be responsible enough for us to fight poverty and reach for wealthy living.

Crimes

by: Vera Dorothy Yvonne Escosio

According to the dictionary, “crime is an action or omission that constitutes an offense that may be prosecuted by the state and is punishable by law.” Crime is a major problem that our community or country has. On top of that are illegal drug trade, human trafficking, murder and domestic violence. But why do you think people commit crime? Is this their choice or not? Can we prevent it?

As of year 2016, President Rodrigo Duterte, the current Leader in the Philippines, Proposed the War on drugs. But what does the war on drugs have to do with crime? Well, because the leading types of criminals are under the usage of drugs. The roots of all the crimes are connected to drug related incident, for example, those users will do anything for them to have the medicine, they will steal, rob banks, to have sufficient moneys to buy stuffs, and some, to hide and cover up their crimes, they have to kill, and commit crime.

It is not only because of the influence of drugs, people have many reasons on why they commit crime; one of these is because of money. Some may really need it and do not have a choice but just to take the risk. Some are being commanded by people with higher authority in exchange of money. And others are just too greedy to have lots of money.

Apparently people may avoid crimes, it’s just because of the people with higher positions, or with higher authority committing crime such as corruption, if only they can stop that, then our country will not suffer from poverty, then people won’t do crime.

We can prevent this kind of situation if we learn how to contain ourselves, we must not be greedy and we must not plant grudges in our hearts. If we want to have a better community, a better country, and a better future, let us stop the crimes from emerging, let us prevent it so that our life will be better, our lives will be safe even if we roam around the streets all night.

It only takes a leader and unity to solve this kind of problem.

Corruption

by: Sunshine Kaye Rabino

Corruption is one of the most serious social issues in the Philippines, it includes many activities, including bribery, and embezzlement. In simple words, it is the selfishness of one individual in order to pursue his or her self-interest. This devious act results to harsh circumstances for the victims, like poverty and worse, it can lead to crime.

In recent years, there were many evidences of corruption that were executed in the Philippine government. Each government officials were given a certain amount of money for their projects financially but these officials never used them right, so either a little amount of money were given to Filipinos or sometimes, none. It challenged the Filipino Citizens because some of them are not wealthy enough to provide for their needs, and wants, or in short, to survive. Thus, the poverty in the Philippines has risen.

Last December 31, 2013, GMA published the case of Janet Lim Napoles, a businesswoman who is believed to be the leader of the issue about the Pork Barrel Scam, which results to thousands of Filipinos being angry with this. And this issue was later confirmed that some government officials were also behind this said issue.

It was then discovered that these officials, literally spent the “people’s money” for their own desires. Billions of pesos were stolen from the Filipino People.

Not all people are rich and wealthy, we must be fair enough so that our economy, or our country’s economy will increase so not only the rich will be benefited, but also the poor people will be given the chance to provide for their needs and Philippines will be a fair country. The government officials must be honest in recording, keeping and giving their money so that all of us will be benefited and our society will be clean and people will be happy.
